Richie Johnston, a senior at North Phoenix Prep, won the Division 4 boys individual title at the Arizona AIA state championship meet at Crossroads Park in Gilbert. Johnston covered the 5-kilometer layout in 16:03.8 to improve from 10th place last season and give the Gladiators back-to-back individual champions after Jordan Black won last year. Sammy Johnston, his junior brother, took third for the second year in a row in 16:23.1 for North Phoenix Prep, which finished sixth overall as a team with 147 points after capturing the crown last season.
